The Gonsalves Brothers of the Golden Eagles:
In the world of Football, it is truly a very rare phenomenon that we get to witness brothers managing to make the cut professionally, and being able to say they have played the game at the highest level!
Some of the usual names that come to mind may be the Boateng brothers of Germany and Ghana, The Toure brother of the Ivory Coast or even the famous Baresi brother of the ’90s who went on to captain the two halves of the city of Milan.
For how rare it is to have something like this happen in the football sphere, It is almost unheard of, in this day and age to have it happen in a scenario where both brothers play for the same team. A scenario that in recent history has only played out with the Neville brothers of Manchester, the Ameobi brothers of Newcastle United (and more recently) & the Longstaff brothers of Newcastle United.
For Indian fans, however, the journey to find such a scenario may be closer home than first expected because playing with the most successful club in Indian football, ( 5 time NFL Champions Dempo SC) are a band of brothers who are tearing up the Goa Professional League this season.
Cue Alber and Pedro Gonsalves of the Golden Eagles who have, after six games in the Goa Professional League, have Dempo SC sitting easy at the very top of the league standings!
Both brothers have had an accomplished career in their own right having played for clubs like Churchill Brothers FC, Sporting Clube De Goa and even Fateh Hyderabad AFC. The younger of the lot, also having a hand, (or in this case a leg) in helping Goa win the Lusofonia Games held in 2014.
With older brother Pedro being the one, pulling the strings in the center of the park, Alber is the man making sure that no chances are squandered, hammering the ball into the net.
In the 6 games this season so far, the brothers have helped Dempo Sports Club, earn 5 Victories, keeping 4 clean sheets and scoring 16 goals in the bargain! Both brothers pitching in with a combined total of 4 goals and 3 assists so far.
Having found a new lease of life at Dempo Sports Club, the brothers under the watchful eye of the gaffer Samir Naik, will look to once again create waves in the Indian Football Scene.
With Dempo Sports Club playing Guardian Angels next in the Goa Professional League, the brother will look to work their magic yet again on the 12th of this month and extend the golden eagles lead at the top of the standings.
