Sep 22 (Goa) : Shillong Lajong registered a fluent 3-0 win over Dempo SC in the first round match of the I-League played at Duler Ground here on Sunday.
Dempo started with a 4-5-1 formation with Englishman Billy Mehmet leading the attack for the home side. Japanese Shinnosuke Honda partnered Australian Simon Colosimo, Samir Naik and Debabrata Roy in the defence while the midfield was packed with Brazilian Roberto Silva along with Jewel Raja, Mandar Rao Desai Peter Carvalho and Clifford Miranda
Shilling Lajong started with Japanese imports Minchol Son and Taisuke Matsugae while Brazilian Williams Silva played a supporting role to striker Cornell Glen.
The visiting side looked more likely to open the scoring as Cornell glen tricked Honda to unleash a curling drive from outside the box to open the scoring sheet 1-0.
Eight minutes later Shillong were awarded a free kick as Dempo’s custodian Subhasis Choudhury handled the ball outside the 18 yard box. Boithang Haokip made no mistake in scoring from the free kick as Shillong took the lead further to 2-0.
After the change of sides Dempo looked to be in control of the match. Clifford Miranda came close to scoring in the 54th minute after receiving a cross from Jewel raja, however his shot went off target. Dempo tried desperately to get back into the game and even created couple of chances but they were not clinical enough when opportunities came by.
Last goal of the match was scored by Glen Cornell in the 66th minute who finished a well set move by beating Dempo defenders
Speaking later at the post match press conference Dempo coach Arthur Papas rued on the missed chances by his players. He admitted that his strikers will have to be clinical in their finishing and the midfield would require more coordination among them. Speaking further he said it was for the first time that all eleven played togeth3er and that he was very much confidant that they wil play better in future matches.
