Dempo Sports Club inched closer to I-League promotion with a 3-0 win over Gangtok Himalayan Football Club to remain in the top spot of the Second Division I-League, at Nehru Stadium, here, on Thursday.
In the first half, Dempo SC were leading 1-0.
Dempo SC dominated the proceedings right from the start with wingers Romeo Fernandes and Mandar Rao Dessai working their magic and well supported by Germanpreeth Singh and Jewel Raja Shaikh in midfield.
Dempo SC’s first real chance came in the 13th minute when Holicharan Narzary shot was cleared to safety by the rival goalkeeper Shambhu Mistry and then moments later Germanpreeths effort came off the cross bar.
Dempo finally broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when striker Felix Odili Chidi set up Mandar with a perfect through ball and the latter unleashed a venomous shot for the opener.
Within two minutes, Romeo passed the ball to Felix but the Nigerian saw his effort blocked by the rival keeper.
In the second half, Dempo SC started with renewed ideas and scored two goals.
Mandar scored his brace from the left flank as his shot curled to the far corner in the 83rd minute after an assist by substitute Bevan D’Mello.
In the 85th minute, Dempo SC sealed three points as Holicharan converted a penalty as rival defender Karan Atwal intentionally blocked Beevan in the danger zone.
