Goa Pro League 2014: Dempo Sporting split points

Sporting Clube de Goa came with an equaliser four minutes before the end to hold Dempo Sports Club to a 1-1 draw in the second round match of the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, here on Sunday.

Dempo took the lead in the 17th minute through Joy Ferrao and Victorino Fernandes levelled terms for Sporting in the 86th minute of play.

After Sunday’s match Dempo have four points, while Sporting stands with two points.

Both the teams fielded almost the same side which played in the charity match at the same venue, where Dempo had won the tussle by a solitary goal.

At the early part of the match, Sporting keeper Melroy Fernandes managed to collect Gabriel Fernandes stiff grounder and minute’s later fisted the ball to safety off a long cross by Nicolau Borges.

However in the 17th minute, Dempo surged ahead when a defensive error from Sporting’s foreign signing Spanish Pablo Zurera was capitalised by Dempo’s Holicharan Narzary, who moved a few steps towards rival goalpost and set up an unmarked Joy Ferrao, who slotted the ball into the far corner of the goal, 1-0.

Sporting almost equalised in the 21st minute, where a deadly cross by U-20 Mauvin Borges at the first post was headed by Beevan D’Mello, which was blocked by keeper Laxmikant Kattimani, and the ball travelled to Mauvin whose grounder hit the defender for a corner.

Dempo stopper backs Shallum Pires and Fulganco Cardozo gave very little space for Sporting’s Mauvin and Beevan to have a good look at their goal.

At the very start of the second session, Sporting coach Oscar Bruzon brought in Victorino Fernandes to partner Mauvin in the attack and Joseph Pereira in the midfield.

A long ball at the goal by Dempo’s Shallun Pires was controlled by Joy Ferrao but his shot was blocked by keeper Melroy. Once again Melroy came to his team’s rescue as blocked Joy’s flick off Holicharan’s cross.

As the match progressed, Sporting came with a series of attack where skipper Jovel Martins latched a long ranger which was parried for a corner by Dempo keeper Laxmikant. Finally in the 86th minute, a superb cross by Jovel left the Dempo defense napping with opportunist Victorino Fernandes finishing it with a half volley to the delight of their supporters, 1-1.
