MARGAO: Dempo Sports Club carved out a facile 3-1 win over Wilred Leisure SC to garner full points in the GFA’s Kingfisher professional football league match played at Nehru stadium, Fatorda-Margao on Wednesday.
Dempo were leading 2-0 at half time through a superlative goal, one of the best seen so far in the league, in the 25th minute, the holders then buttressed their lead in the 33rd minute after Wilred Leisure defender Joseph Dias shot into his own goal in an attempt to clear the ball to safety.
In the second session, Romeo Fernandes put the issue beyond the reach of the rivals when he knocked the ball into the nets from close in the 47th minute. Wilred pulled one back in the 75th minute through Jerose Oliveira.
Dempo were a much superior lot in all the departments of the game and could have easily swelled their victory margin had not the strikers missed some glorious chances, particularly in the second session of play. Substitute Myron Fernandes and Joe Rodrigues in particular frittered away the opportunities to score from close distances in the second session of play.
The first few minutes of play were well contested by both the teams and the way Wilred came up with some snap raids gave an impression that they would not let Dempo off so easily. But then as the proceedings wore on and goals began to come forth, Wilred caved in under pressure even though it was Jerose Oliveira who worked tirelessly and tried in vain to trouble the Dempo defence. At times, he did really go past the deep Dempo defence and though he faltered to score he finished in style to bring a reducer for his team which was a face saver.
Dempo defender Samir Naik was the pick of the lot today who despite defending his citadel also moved up with the ball and created goal scoring opportunities.
In fact, it was Samir Naik’s scheming that helped Dempo to take the lead when he raced down deep inside the rival box after dodging three defenders and then released the ball to better placed Rohan Ricketts.
Sensing danger to his goal, Wilred goalkeeper Maclas Moraes charged out in an attempt to tackle Ricketts but the English striker with fine imagination saw the opportunity to score in style as he lobbed the ball over advancing custodian to the far corner of the nets, thus scoring the best goal of the season in the league.
Dempo were all over the rival territory with Romeo Fernandes dazzling with his skills and fine runs on the flanks as well as in the middle to create all sorts of trouble for his opponents and create opportunities to score.
So telling was the pressure on the Wilred team that in an attempt to clear the ball to safety defender Joseph Dias shot in his own goal when Dempo’s Nixon Castanha sent a perfect cross in the goal mouth.
When the second session was hardly two minutes old, Dempo’s youthful striker who fought hard to get his name on the score line struck beautifully after receiving an equally good pass from Cliffton Gonsalves.
Dempo had thereafter quite good chances to still increase their scoreline but muffed the chances.
Wilred Leisure pulled one back when Jerose Oliveira snatched the ball from Godwin Franco who could have done much better to foil the rival striker and as Oliveira received the ball he had no hesitation to beat Tyson Caiado.
