2014 June 4: Dempo Sports Club players Romeo Fernandes, Pronoy Halder, Narayan Das, Allwyn George and Mandar Rao Desai have been selected for the Indian National U23 teams training camp starting next month in Bangalore. They were picked by national coach Wim Koevermans after impressive performances in the I-League.
Training under the watchful eyes of head coach Arthur Papas, these young talents have extensive experience playing in the top tier of Indian football.
“As a club we made giant strides last season in promoting what we consider the cream of the young talented Indian footballers and the selection of this many players for the Indian U23 National Team further justifies the process we have undertaken. All five players have very exciting futures ahead and this upcoming experience with the National Team will only serve to develop them further and in return assist Dempo SC in the long term” says Arthur.
While the first four have earlier represented the country in age group tournaments, It s will be a golden opportunity for Mandar Rao Desai to fulfill his childhood dream for playing for India.
The zippy midfielder was handpicked by Arthur Papas who thought he fits well into his long term plans for the club “Upon my arrival at the club Mandar had yet to play in the I-League, but from the moment we began his ability was instantly recognisable and he combines this with a burning desire that is required to be an elite footballer. We have invested a lot of time in Mandar and are very confident that he will go on to fulfil his potential representing both India and Dempo SC in the future” said Arthur.
The training camp will begin from July 1-20, 2014. The national team shall also play series of friendlies against arch rivals Pakistan on the 17th and 20th of August.
