Dempo Sports Club avenged their loss against Sporting Clube de Goa in the TACA Goa U-20 tournament by thrashing Sporting Clube de Goa 6-1 to win the Sesa Cup 2012 in emphatic fashion.
Coach Mathew D’Costa started with the same line up that won the semi-finals against Churchill Brothers. Dempo took time to settle down but soon got going. Romeo Fernandes missed an open chance after being one on one with the goalkeeper and his strike partner Clencio Pinto too shot wide after having the goalkeeper at his mercy. But at the stroke of half an hour off a Mandar Rao Dessai corner- who else but captain courageous Shallum Pires ran goal wards and buried a thumping header into the top corner giving the Sporting keeper Dietmar Fernandes no chance. From there on the floodgates opened with Dempo attacking at will. It was all Dempo from that point on. They literally toyed with the Sporting team, spraying passes all over and creating numerous chances. Five minutes after Shallum scored, Romeo scored the first of his three goals after driving home low into the bottom corner to give Dempo a 2-0 lead going into the break.
In the second session Clencio Pinto added Dempo’s third after receiving an unselfish ball from Mandar Dessai and all that he needed to do was to place the ball in the net. Sporting were awarded a lifeline when the referee dubiously pointed to the spot ruling that Shallum Pires brought down Sporting’s Jason Fernandes. Pritam Singh converted the penalty to give Sporting some hope going into the final twenty five minutes or so
However just a few minutes later Sporting’s Charles Cardoso gave away a penalty at the other end after he literally hacked into Dempo substitute Brian Mascarenhas. Romeo Fernandes stroked the penalty home to put the result beyond doubt.
Dempo were gifted their fifth by the Sporting keeper who ironically was the hero in the TACA Goa final where he saved three penalties. A routine harmless cross was spilled by the keeper and Brian Mascarenhas was there to pounce on the loose ball and slot home. Romeo Fernandes completed the rout just before added time could be shown when he received a through ball from Micky Vaz, rounded off the keeper and walked with the ball into the goal much to the embarrassment of the Sporting fans and players.
Sesa Goa MD, Mr. P.K. Mukherjee was the Chief Guest and gave away the cash prize of Rs. 75,000/- and trophy to captain Shallum Pires.
Coach Mathew D’Costa was thrilled at the result and said that the boys had really worked hard for this victory. “ After the defeat in the TACA Goa tournament, I told the boys to give me the Sesa Cup and they responded in emphatic fashion. They deserve all the accolades.”
