Dempo Sports Club has confirmed its participation in the inaugural edition of India’s first professional beach soccer championship to be held from February 5 to 10 in Goa.
Mumbai based sports entertainment company, SE TransStadia Pvt. Ltd, has tied up with Beach Soccer World Wide (BSWW) to promote Beach Soccer in India and is hosting Barefoot Beach Soccer Tournament in Goa. ‘Barefoot 2013′, the Beach Soccer Tournament, will comprise of more than 50 teams and will be contested from 5th to 10th of February 2013. The tournament is being conducted under the aegis and auspices of the Beach Soccer World Wide and is recognised by the Goa Football Association.
Calangute Beach in North Goa has been confirmed as the venue for Barefoot 2013 and is also set to host a Music festival on 8th and 9th February along with the “Beach Soccer” matches. According to the official website of the tournament, international DJ’s like DJ Simon Patterson, DJ Marlo, DJ Sasha along with their Indian counterparts DJ Turin Mehta and DJ Arjun Vagale will spin some incredible compositions from their music consoles to add to the overall beach soccer experience.
India had earlier participated in the World Cup qualifiers in UAE in 2007 and Asian Beach Games in Bali in 2009. Gavin Araujo, previously member of the Indian team and now a part of the organising committee for Barefoot 2013 was upbeat about the event “I am happy that the first edition is being held in Goa as it mixes the relaxed and easy going life that we enjoy here with the talent and commitment of Goan youth towards football.”
“The game is immensely fast-paced and is played on a more compact pitch. This allows players to shoot from virtually anywhere keeping the goalie on his toes at all times. You can be assured of a goal being scored in every match. Given the softer, more forgiving nature of sea sand, many players are inclined to attempt the “glory shots” rarely seen in the grass game. These include scissor kicks, flying headers, and bicycle kicks for example. The spectators will be glued to their seats as there will be plenty of action on field” said Mr. Araujo.
Maximum of 10 players are allowed in a team with 5 being on-field players (1 goal keeper, 4 outfield players) and 5 as substitutes.
Total time for a game will be of 45 minutes with 3 playing periods of 10 minutes each. 2 minute intervals have been allocated for the two breaks between to the each period. Extra time of 3 minutes is allocated in case a winner has not been decided in normal time. Penalty kicks shall decide the winner if it has not been decided in the stipulated game time.
