Dempo Sports Club stormed into the semi finals of the GFA Knockout football tournament after a thumping come from behind 5-1 win over Sesa Football Academy at the Raia ground.
At half time though things were not looking so good for the I-league champions after being a goal down thanks to a stunning volley from Sesa coach Clifford Chukwuma’s son Chikwudi. Coach Armando Colaco started with several reserve players giving them a chance to do the Dempo jersey. Young Shallum Pires partnered Rowilson Rodrigues at centre back while, Marcus Peixoto and William Colaco started at left and right back respectively. Nicolau Borges and Joe Rodrigues started on the flanks while Godwin Franco and Micky Fernandes starting at the middle of the park. Cliffton Gonsalves and birthday boy Joy Ferrao- who was also the captain- started up front.
The uneven ground made life difficult for Dempo to play their passing game and Sesa were quick to capitalize after Chikwudi Chukwuma blasted home a volley past goalkeeper Luis Barreto. After crossing over, Dempo took only two minutes to equalize, Nicolau Borges headed in from close range after Joy Ferrao’s shot was deflected off a Sesa defender. From then on the floodgates opened and Dempo started to run riot after the introduction of Japanese Yusuke Kato. Dempo took the lead in the 63rd minute after Kato’s brilliantly placed the ball into the far corner. Barely a minute later Nicolau scored his second to make it 3-1 after being fed by Marcus Peixoto.
In the 78th minute Dempo made it four after Kato’s shot was deflected off a defender. Cliffton Gonsalves completed the rout nine minutes from time after a howler form the Sesa keeper allowed Cliffton to tap in for Dempo’s fifth goal. Dempo will play the semi-finals on the 11th of May.
