Dempo seals fate of Mariners

An inspired Dempo SC team beat Mohun Bagan 3-0 at the PJN stadium, Margao and sent the mariners into a state of shock while collecting full three points from the game.

Striker Joaquim Abranches broke the deadlock in the 40thminute with a sumptuous strike to put Dempo in the lead. Ryuji Seuoka joined the party four minutes later when Peter Carvalho was fouled inside the penalty box by Nirmal Chhetri, resulting in a penalty kick which was taken by Seuoka.

Godwin Franco

The final nail in Mohun Bagan’s coffin was hammered from 25 yards by Godwin Franco in the 70th minute as  Nirmal Chhetri offered a mistimed clearance to an unmarked Franco.

With this win, Dempo SC have now collected 19 points from eight matches  and go second in the league behind East Bengal (20 points), while Mohun Bagan slid one place to sixth as they stay on 11 points.

Dempo SC stuck to their usual 4-4-2 formation with Mahesh Gawli, Samir Naik, Peter Calvalho and Debrata Roy controlling the defence while Godwin, Ricketts and Rowilson gave a good account of themselves in the midfield.  Ricketts was seen at his best when he made the rival defenders dance to his tune with his deft touches and excellent footwork. It looked like the former EPL star is warming up for the task at Dempo SC.

Karim Bencherifa, was left to do with whatever little he had in his kitty as his lone striker, Odafa Okolie, being not even allowed breathing space by the gritty Rowilson and Mahesh Gawli. Things got bad from worse in the Mohun Bagan camp as Biswajit Saha was Red carded by the referee for his second yellow card of the match in the 54th minute.

The setback did much to demoralize Mohun Bagan who had offered very little in the opening stages.  In the end, Mohun Bagans loss was confirmed by Godwin Franco who smashed a volley from 25 yards, leaving Bagan keeper Shilton Paul speechless.

Dempo Midfielders did well to retain possession before cutting in to feed Ryuji Seuoka and Abranches. Armando Colaco altered his side in the second half to bring Ricketts in place of Clifford Miranda which had an immediate impact on the game. Rickets would sway with the ball at his own will with a swarm of Bagan defenders behind him like bees after honey. He was unlucky to score on a couple of occasions.

Armando Colaco was wall praise for his players for showing determination and fair play during the entire match.

“I am happy with the win today; it was the best performance I have seen after the Federation Cup final. The team has kept up the respect we deserve” said the coach who

chose not to comment on the Climax suspension Issue. “Climax is a class apart; however we had to deal with the situation imposed on us. I am happy that Godwin Franco was true to our expectations. He has lot of potential and talent in him”.

Dempo will now play Salgaocar in yet another thriller on 01st Dec at the PJN stadium.
