Dempo Score Comfortable Win In Practise Match

Dempo Sports Club scored a fluent 3-0 win over AirIndia in their first practice match of the new season at the artificial turf at Chowgule Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The match started at 7:30 am and it allowed coach assistant Mauricio Afonso, who was deputizing for Armando Colaco (away in Delhi for a meeting), to get a feel of the squad before the season opening Charity match scheduled to be held on the 15th of August.

Dempo tried out all their 41 registered players for the game. Cliffton Gonsalves scored a goal that was sandwiched between the twin strikes by new Japanese recruit Ryuji Sueoka.

Dempo were up against their former teammates-John Dias and Micky fernandes who have switched allegiance to the Airmen this season. Dempo started with Mandar Rao Dessai on the left and the youngster immediately impressed when he put in a dangerious cross that was fumbled by the Air India keepr allowing Sueoka to tap in the rebound from close range.

The second goal too saw a great cross being sent in by Mandar off a free kick and Cliffton rose high to nod home. The midfield initially had Romeo Fernandes, Mandar Rao Dessai, Climax Lawrence and Seriton Fernandes and later on Godwin Franco, Micky Vaz and Aniston Fernandes got a look in.

Suoeka then added a third late in the match after a cross from the right was met with a sliding effort from the Japanese. Selwyn Fernandes- back from a long injury lay-off lasted the full 90 minutes much to the delight of the coaching and medical staff at Dempo. The national team players- Rowilson Rodrigues, Joaquim Abranches, Anthony Pereira, Clifford Miranda and Subhasish Roy Chowdhury- were missing in action, having left earlier in the day for the National Camp in Delhi in preparation for the Nehru Cup due to start on the 22nd of August.
