Dempo Sports Club had to work hard in order to secure a 2-1 win over a resilient ONGC side in U-20 I-League match played here at Jamshedpur.
The Eagles began impressively but soon wilted after some shoddy defending by their centre backs. ONGC took advantage as they pushed the Dempo side into a defensive mode. Their strikers were at the heart of the threat as they broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through a curling free kick. ONGC were leading 1-0 until the half time.
After some strong words by their coach Matthew D’Costa during the break, Dempo Juniors gained fluency and attacked from the start. ONGC’s resistance broke down in the very first minute of the second half as striker Clencio Pinto lofted the ball over the goalkeeper to equal the scores.
Myron Fernandes added his name into the score sheet in the 50th minute as he brilliantly stuck on to a pass from Edberg Sequira to shoot home the winner. In the end, Dempo maintained their defensive resilience to emerge victorious.
Dempo Juniors face Tata Football Academy in the last match of group B on 14th March. It is going to be a must-win match for Dempo if they want to qualify for the Final round of I-League U-20.
