Dempo Juniors a point away from qualification

Dempo Sports Club Juniors are a point away from qualification to the second phase in the AIFF U-20 I-League. The colts from Dempo take on Sporting Clube de Goa  tomorrow at the Poriat ground in Calangute and a draw should see them through to the second round which will be played at Kalyani in West Bengalfrom the 6th to the 19th of May 2012.


In the opening match Dempo routed Churchill Brothers 5-1 at the Tilak Maidan. Churchill drew first blood in the 22nd minute. However, India U-22 select, Romeo Fernandes scored a brilliant four goals while Seriton Fernandes scored the fifth as Dempo came from behind to complete the demolition.


In the second match Dempo were unlucky to draw 1-1 with Salgaocar Sports Club in a game they dominated from start to finish. Salgaocar scored in the first half and managed to hold on to the lead till the 83rd minute. But again it was Romeo Fernandes who got Dempo the equalizer and ensure that Dempo top the group going into the final round of matches.

Currently Dempo top the group with four points followed by Sporting Clube de Goa and Churchill Brothers who are on three points each. Salgaocar are at the bottom with a lone point.


Shillong Lajong FC and Prayag United have already qualified for the final phase leaving the Kolkata giants-East Bengaland Mohun Bagan behind. Two teams fromGoaand two teams from Mumbai will make up the final six teams in the second phase.


Currently Mumbai FC and Pune FC are leading the table in the Mumbai leg with six points each although Pune FC have played a game less.
