Dempo in final of Sesa Cup 2012

Dempo Sports Club Juniors stormed into the final of the SESA U-20 Tournament defeating rivals Churchill Brothers Sports Club 4-2 in an exciting match played at the Sesa Football Academy Ground, Sirsaim. In a repeat of the GFA U-20 TACA Goa semi-finals- where Dempo prevailed 1-0, the young Turks of Dempo put it across Churchill Brothers in clinical fashion dismantling the the Varca based side 4-2. Dempo will now meet Sporting Clube de Goa in the finals on Sunday, April 1st.


Coach Mathew D’Costa started with Mandar Rao Dessai on the left, relegating Brian Mascarenhas to the bench. The formation was tweaked a little to accommodate Romeo Fernandes as a striker with Clencio Pinto partnering him upfront. Tunard Fernandes was accommodated in the middle of the park along with Micky Vaz. Jeovito Fernandes and Mandar played on the flanks. Shallum Pires and Jos Vaz manned the defense while Bharat Thapa and Vincy Fernandes were the fullbacks.

Dempo made their intentions clear right from the word go and created numerous chances to score. Romeo Fernandes blasted over from close range after just nine minutes on the clock. It took Dempo 17 minutes to open their account when Tunard Fernandes from the right put in a brilliant cross to Romeo who slotted home from an acute angle. Four minutes there was brilliance written all over the move which resulted in a fantastic goal. Mandar Rao Dessai picked the ball from midfield and brilliantly essayed it to Jeovito Fernandes who rounded the keeper and placed it into the net. Ten minutes later Dempo made it 3-0 after Romeo Fernandes pounced on a loose ball and slammed it into the top corner.

Churchill pulled one back through a Nicholas Fernandes long ranger to make it 3-1 at the lemon break. In the second half Dempo were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. Dempo got a fourth when a brilliantly worked set piece saw Romeo slamming it and Jesmon Carvalho hitting the rebound after the keeper had initially saved it.
