Dempo finish 3rd in the first leg of Goa League

18 Aug: Dempo Sports Club finished off their first leg of Goa league in style when they trounced minnows Tuff LaxmiPrasad SC by 2-0. Goals in each session of play from Nickson Castanha and substitute Mandar Rao Dessai were enough for Dempo to secure full points at Duler Stadium.

Dempo SC finished 3rd in the table with 17 points from 9 matches, marginally behind second placed Sporting CdG who have 19 points from the name number of matches. Churchill Bros. lead the pack with 23 points.

It was an entertaining first 45 minutes as both the sides produced good attacking football. Dempo SC’s Gabriel Fernandes had an early strike at the goal but his stiff grounder rolled harmlessly wide off the target.

Minutes later Gabriel dribbled past three players and instead of shooting decided to pass to Jeje Lalpekhula who in turn set up Nickson Castanha who fired into the nets, 1-0.

Dempo led 1-0 at the half time.

After changing over sides, Laxmi Prasad almost found the equalizer when Shashank Ashwekar’s intended cross was heading into the back of the net, but keeper Laxmikant recovered well to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The Golden Eagles killed any hope of a fight back in the 80th minute when substitute Mandar Rao Dessai capitalized on a blunder from Laxmi Prasad’s backline, to seal the victory.
