After a bruising encounter against East Bengal, an injury-hit Dempo Sports Club take on giant killers Shillong Lajong Football Club in a Round 4 match at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.
Dempo Team News and Tactical Analysis
Dempo Sports Club lost three players due to injuries and had five of their player’s yellow carded in a high voltage clash at the Salt Lake started. Whether the happenings in that game takes a toll on the result this game remains to be seen though. Dempo have adequate replacements lined up in case their star players pull out injured. Rowilson Rodrigues will be a straightforward replacement in case Mahesh Gawli pulls out while coach Armando Colaco has the option of starting with Joaquim Abranches on the left in case Clifford Miranda fails a fitness test. The biggest blow however could be that of Koko Sakibo who is expected to be out for at least two months due to fractured ribs. That leaves a huge dilemma for Armando who now has to shuffle his midfield considerably. Young Romeo Fernandes could start on the right if Clifford is ruled out, with Anthony Pereira taking his place on the left of midfield. The Dempo defense would have to be particularly wary of the big Nigerians Ebi Sukore and Gbeneme Friday. In the absence of Koko, a big responsibility would rest on the shoulders of Ryuji Sueoka. The Japanese has been Dempo’s top scorer this season and in this game he may have to partner with Rohan Ricketts up front. If Rohan partners Sueoka up front then Dempo are likely to play a 4-4-1-1 formation with Ricketts being the withdrawn striker.
Shillong Lajong Team News and Tactical Formation:
Shillong Lajong will draw confidence from the fact that they beat favourites Parayag United Sports Club in their previous encounter and Desmond Bulpins boys will look to at least avoid defeat in this game. Under Bulpin, Lajong have used the long ball strategy to good effect and have had a string of decent results. The North East Side are currently fifth in the table and have got seven points from their last four games. Their strikers Friday and Sukore have been tremendous for them and the experience of Renedy Singh on the left of midfield has worked wonders for them. India international Sushil Singh will also be a key man in attack for Lajong. Their long ball strategy will also look to frustrate Dempo’s free flowing football. A lot will rest on William Passah at centre back. Lajong will in all probability play a five man midfield which will mean that they would have to break quickly and Passah would be the focal point from where these attacks generate.
Blast from the Past:
Dempo hammered Lajong 5-0 in the corresponding fixture last season with a brace from Anthony Pereira and goals from Koko Sakibo, Clifford Miranda and Ranty Martins.
Players to Watch out for:
Dempo : Rohan Ricketts
Lajong: Gbeneme Friday
Dempo Starting XI (Likely): Subhasish, Cresson, Rowilson, Roy, Valeriano, Clifford, Anthony, Climax, Peter, Rohan, Sueoka
