Churchill BFC in the queue for AFC Cup

According to reports from Goal.com, the AIFF is preparing itself to invite Churchill Brothers FC for participating in the AFC Cup 2013 after Dempo SC expressed its inability to play AFC Cup matches outside Goa.

As per the AFC directives, winners of the I-League (Dempo SC) and Federation Cup (East Bengal) automatically make it into the AFC Cup, hence the AIFF would now request

Churchill Brothers, who finished third in the league last season to participate in the competition.

General Secretary of the club Mr. Armando Colaco had earlier written a letter to the AIFF regarding unavailability of the PJN stadium for the AFC Cup matches due to the renovation work for forthcoming Lusofonia Games 2013. (Read the earlier report http://demposportsclub.com/?p=1363).

It is learnt that the AFC has rejected Dempo’s request to allow them to play AFC cup matches at Vasco’s Tilak Maidan. Mr. Colaco, in his letter to AIFF, had explained the reasons for not playing outside Goa as their earlier experiences have seen a low spectator turnout, less media coverage and loss of club revenue.

Dempo SC has previously participated four times in Asia’s second tier competition since it started in 2004. In an impressive track record at the AFC cup, Dempo SC has managed to reach the round of 16 twice in the year 2006 and 2010, and also featured in the Semi-finals of the 2008 edition before losing out narrowly to finalists Safa FC of Lebanon.
