Airtel I-League: Match Report- Mumbai FC Vs Dempo SC

Sep 29: Mumbai resisted a tough challenge to rally and claim a 1-1 draw against Dempo Sports Club thereby denying the visitors of their first I-League victory.

Dempo Coach Arthur Papas made 2 changes to his line up from the team’s outing last weekend when Mandar Desai and Godwin Franco made way for Jeje Lalpekhlua and Peter Carvalho. Jeje proved his decision correct when he headed home a Clifford Miranda corner in the dying minutes of the first half.

The Golden Eagles appeared on course to collect all three points, but Anwar Ali produced Mumbai’s response after 86 minutes to ensure the hosts claimed a share of the spoils in a tense affair at the Balewadi Stadium.

During the first-half proceedings, DempoSC dictated the terms of the affair with the hosts struggling to find their usual cadence in physical play. Beto and Jeje were at the helm of affairs with the latter making darting runs into enemy territory.  He came close to scoring in the 14th minute but Beto’s cross was too far for him to trap and shoot. The Golden Eagles took advantage of its uptick in confidence to swing the ball from left to right to create the opener.  Jewel Raja was unlucky to see his shot sway above the bar in the 32nd minute as Dempo maintained its pressure on Mumbai FC. Just when it seemed that both teams headed into a barren first half, Jeje scored off from a corner kick to give some respite to the anxious fans.

Matters improved a bit after the interval as Mumbai FC started brightly and eventually inserted Manuel D’Souza and Tochhawng to turn the proceedings. They finally got it correct in the 86th minute when Anwar Ali headed home a Nicolas Rodrigues corner.

Dempo searched for the winner in the late stages with Clifford and Gabriel both going close, but neither of them could convert their chances thereby ending the contest with a share of the spoils.

Dempo will now play against Rangdajied United on the 4th of October
