The President of Dempo Sports Club, Mr. Shrinivas V. Dempo has brought 34% stake in the parent holding company of one of the most successful youth academies and football club in Europe – FC Midtjylland (Denmark) for future endeavors. A first of its kind association in the field of sports will redefine the character of Football in India. The partnership has managed to plant a seed of hope for a better future as the international football giant would bring in global exposure and strategic finesse in Indian Football.
Brief history about FCM
The story of FCM is a fascinating one, a very rare case in football where two derby rivals merged to form a new club. Herning Fremad (founded in 1918) and Ikast FS (founded in 1935). Herning Fremad and Ikast FS had a strong local rivalry, but never really played a significant role in Danish football.
Thats when the Chairmen of the two Clubs decided that for them to have a better chance of challenging the likes of FC Copenhagen and Brondby, the biggest teams in Danish football, they would have to put up a united front. Thus the idea of a merger between the two clubs evolved and the rest, as they say, is history.
After long deliberations, in April 1999 FC Midtjylland came into existence. After a season in the second division, they immediately won promotion to the Danish Superliga, the Danish top division, in a season where they garnered more points than any other team in the history of the second division. Since then FCM are going from strength to strength.
The FCMAcademy is based in Ikast and is widely regarded as one of the best youth systems in Europe at the moment. Having started the Academy only in 2004, they have achieved great success with their Academy.
The Academy has an excellent scouting network and identifies potential players when they are very young. They are given the best of training at the Academy and when ready, they are picked to play for the FC Midtjylland first team. One can assess the quality of the Academy by looking at the number of players in the current FCM first team from the Academy. More than 80% of the FCM first team is made up of Academy players. That is remarkable for a Club who is finishing in the top 4 of the Danish Superliga each year.
Many of the players are now playing for various Clubs across Europe. The most prominent names to have been sold to other Clubs in Europe are:
Simon Kjaer – Palermo (Italy), VfL Wolfsberg (Germany), AS Roma (Italy), Lille (France), linked with a possible move to Manchester United in 2014.
Winston Reid – West Ham United (England)
Sune Kiilreich – Sampdoria (Italy), Silkeborg (Denmark)
Sekou Oliseh – CSKA Moscow, PAOK (Greece)
FCM also operates an Academy in Lagos, Nigeria in partnership with former Nigerian footballer Churchill Oliseh. This Academy has been hugely successful in getting talented Nigerians to train as per FCM training module and also has seen many Nigerians play for FCM in Denmark and later in Europe.
Dempo SC and FC Midtjylland
The Dempo SC-FCM partnership is a long term partnership for football development in India. Through this partnership, we aim to start a top of the line Academy in Goa. With state of the art facilities, combined with technical knowhow from FCM on football coaching, we hope to build the best youth development system not only in India but one of the best in Asia.
The objective of the Academy is to develop top quality professional footballers. The crème de la crème of this Academy will go on to represent DempoSC and FC Midtjylland in their respective leagues and represent India.
The football academy project in Goa will embark upon a journey that would include some hardcore football and professional antics to bring Indian Football to the global standards. FCM will assist Dempo sports club in setting up the academy and professionalizing the administration. They will also help the club to develop more revenue streams, visibility, awareness and much more.
With a focus on producing top class football professionals in the long term, the venture is actualized to feed the dream of having top talents from all over play in Europe and represent India.
